For Tiger Woods it appears a controlled environment will win out over a chance for a competitive one.

Tiger is “likely” to stage his return to golf at the Masters according to The Associated Press. If so, the April 8-11 tournament will end what will be a self-imposed (and mostly unnecessary) four-month hiatus from the PGA Tour after revelations he had more than a dozen girlfriends, news that was disconcerting to his wife, Elin.

His other option was the Arnold Palmer Invitational, a tune-up tournament in his hometown of Orlando in late March. It would’ve allowed him at least a chance to get back into form while playing a favorable course he’s won six times, including each of the last two years. Then he could’ve attacked Augusta with an eye on a fifth green jacket.

The difference though is control. The Masters has a lot of it – over the media, over the gallery, over the atmosphere on its fabled grounds.

The Palmer Invitation at Bay Hill is your typical free-flowing golf tournament, where the players’ locker room is open to media, the public can get rowdy and the opportunity for opportunists is everywhere.

The Masters greatly limits both the number and type of media allowed to attend. There’ll be no TMZ at the “turniment” (at least officially). The players’ dressing room is off limits to reporters. The club, which Woods is a member due to his four championships, can protect him in ways no one else can.

When Woods rushed to give his apology speech, his handlers explained he had to return to rehab and it couldn’t wait. It turned out his second stint was just a week, so that wasn’t really true.

The timing was clearly designed to create as much space between his mea culpa and his return. It allowed the public time to get over the initial reaction and begin longing for him to just get back to hitting golf balls.

Woods has even retained former Bush White House spokesman Ari Fleischer to help his already sizeable marketing team with the spin, according to the New York Post. Fleischer’s sports public relations company has also handled the unpopular Bud Selig, the hated Bowl Championship Series and the disgraced slugger Mark McGwire, whose recent “steroids admission” was short on actual truth.

This is the state of Tiger Woods’ desperation, hiring a PR firm that’s hasn’t been successful at helping even the most down and out entities in sports.

If that’s Tiger’s state of mind, then Augusta was probably the right call. He’ll have a chance to return with some dignity, which should be his right. As much as possible, he can concentrate on playing golf. He can begin reminding the public why they liked him in the first place.

The Palmer Invitational would’ve been bold, would’ve said he’d go right into the teeth of the reaction and would’ve signaled he still considered the Masters a place to win, not rehab.

The old Tiger would’ve done just that. This is the new Tiger Woods though, in every way imaginable. http://www.golf-finder.net/images/fbfiles/images/tiger_woods2.jpg

Nobody knows when Tiger will return, but every tournament between now and Augusta is getting ready, just in case they draw the golden ticket.

Amid reports that Woods has been spotted working with swing coach Hank Haney, tournament organizers are scrambling to prepare for a media onslaught unlike any they've ever seen before. And while we don't know if Tiger will return at Bay Hill in a couple weeks, or at the Transitions or Houston Open -- or, indeed, if he'll return at all anytime soon -- planners have to get ready for the possibility.

"Historically, he hasn’t played the week before the Masters," Steve Timms, tournament director of the Houston Open, told Golfweek. "But these are unusual times. We’re prepared from a security and media standpoint. We’ve been watching the media closely, and we’ve had some weird [credential requests]." One can only guess what those requests might be.

It's a dicey situation for the tournaments. On one hand, they don't want to let in every sleazoid gossip rag and risk offending both Woods and the PGA Tour.

On the other, they're in business to get exposure for themselves and their sponsors, and they'd have the world's eyes on them if Woods returns.

So everybody's making preparations, spending more money and time to allot extra space and security for media. (Augusta, which wouldn't let the President in if it didn't feel like it, is making no such alterations to its normal routine.)

Of course, Tiger could make things much easier on everybody by not pulling his usual routine of waiting until the last second to register for tournaments.

His management team has hinted that he'll give more notice this time, which would sure be nice. http://www.golf-finder.net/images/fbfiles/images/tiger_woods_r.jpg

Engineered to bring golfers maximum forgiveness
the Rapture V2 iron relies on multi-metal technology to launch the ball longer, higher and with more accuracy. A dense tungsten sole weight positions the center of gravity low and away from the face to optimize the launch conditions. An innovation made possible by the lightweight titanium face that frees weight for where it’s needed most—low and on the perimeter.
The high launch angle allows for stronger lofts
So golfers can generate greater distance without sacrificing control. The Custom Tuning Port stabilizes the titanium face to help ensure a solid feel and consistency.

Subject: China's golf boom not quite proceeding as smoothly - by: cherishyou

Here's something you don't see every day -- a story about how wonderful things are in China turns out to not be quite so rosy after all. No, you see that story only about every other day.

In this case, the subject is golf. You'll recall that last fall, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and others traveled to Shanghai for a triumphant HSBC golf tournament, and word on the street was that golf in China was rallying.

Alas, it's not quite as smooth as advertised. While there are 20 golf courses in Beijing, only one of them has actually been developed legally, according to a Chinese government official. That course, the Beijing International Golf Club near the Ming Tombs, was the first course built in Beijing, back in 1984. Later courses have included Pine Valley, designed by Jack Nicklaus, and courses that have hosted the China Open.

Since the development of Beijing International Golf Club, however, developers have gone on a mad land-grab for property, snagging acres of choice farmland for new courses. The government put the clamps down on development of all golf courses, allegedly halting them in 2004. But development has continued nonetheless, and the China Golf Association now estimates that there are an estimated 500 courses across the country.

As with much else in China, the issue is a debate between immediate needs and future planning. Carving up prime farming territory for a golf course may not be the wisest use of resources. And while it's important to note that pro golfers have no culpability in this debate, it would be interesting to see a Jack Nicklaus or a Phil Mickelson take a more active role in encouraging environmentally friendly golf course development. Sure, it'd be like trying to chip over the Great Wall, but it'd be worth a try. http://www.golf-finder.net/images/fbfiles/images/24.jpg

The whole idea of the Champions Tour was to give old codgers, and their equally graying fans, a chance to see their heroes in action one last time, to rage with 9-irons aloft against the dying of the light. Nobody anticipated that somebody would come onto the Champions Tour still in possession of PGA Tour-worthy skills.

Somebody has, and it's getting ugly. In a good way.

On Sunday, Fred Couples won his second straight Champions tournament, the Toshiba Classic. And in the only other tournament he's played, he finished second. First, first, second. Yep, that's a fairly convincing throttling of the field.

Oh, but there's more. Couples currently ranks first on the Champions Tour in driving distance, eagles, scoring average, money and overall ranking, and second in putts per round, par breakers, sand saves, birdie average, putting average, and greens in regulation. That, friends, is utter domination.

Yes, it's three tournaments in. But Couples has the game and the mental makeup to be the best Champions player ever. At age 50, he's a young phenom again.

But he'd better enjoy it while it lasts. Kenny Perry is Champions-eligible this year, and it won't be long before Vijay Singh is too. And then the oldsters will need to start a Senior Champions Tour to get away from these pesky kids. http://www.golf-finder.net/images/fbfiles/images/23.jpg

Australia (AP)—Karrie Webb won her seventh Australian Ladies Masters title Sunday, closing with a course-record 11-under 61 for a six-stroke victory.

Webb, a stroke ahead of defending champion Katherine Hull and South Korea’s Lee Bo-mee entering the final round, finished at 26-under 262 on the Royal Pines course to match the tournament record she set in 1999.

Webb holed a 9-iron approach from about 125 yards for eagle on the par-4 seventh and made a 30-foot putt on No. 18 for her ninth birdie of the round. She broke the course record of 62 set last year by Kristie Smith.

Hull and Lee, bogey-free in four rounds, shot 66s to tie for second in the event sanctioned by Australian Ladies Professional Golf and the Ladies European Tour.

Webb said she thought about shooting a 59.

“When I stood on 16, I knew I had a four-shot lead, and then I was trying to work out how many under I was,” Webb said. “I thought it was 10 under … I thought I could shoot 59, but I was too tired to get nervous about it.”

Webb said her fatigue resulted from the duel with Hull earlier in the round.

“Katherine was pushing me all the way,” Webb said. “Just when I thought I created some breathing space, she came back with a birdie.

“I am really exhausted. On 13, I was 8 under on the day and still only had a two-shot lead. I was really starting to struggle, mentally tired. I just knew I had to dig deep and make some birdies coming in.”

Hull said Webb played “flawless golf.”

“It was just rock solid,” Hull said. “She was swinging it well all day. I couldn’t make a putt coming in, but it was just absolutely clinic golf on Karrie’s part.”

South Korea’s Seo Hee-kyung (66) was fourth at 19 under, and compatriot Ryu So-yeon (70) followed at 15 under. American Amanda Blumenherst, the leader after the first two rounds, shot a 70 to tie for eighth, 13 strokes behind Webb.

Webb, who shot 64 on Saturday, had several threats to her lead early on the back nine Sunday. She sank a 7-footer for par on the par-3 11th after hitting her tee shot in the bunker. Hull pulled within a stroke with a 20-foot birdie putt on the par-5 12th, but Webb matched her with a 10-footer, restoring her two-stroke lead.

She took a three-stroke lead with four to play when she birdied the 14th and Hull left her birdie attempt short.

The 35-year-old Webb has won seven of the 21 Australian Masters held since 1990, and has played in 19 of them, giving her a winning percentage at Royal Pines of 36 percent. Her first win came in 1998, meaning she has won seven of the past 12.

Laura Davies, who won the New Zealand Women’s Open last week for her 73rd worldwide title, finished with a 71 to tie for 25th, 18 strokes behind Webb.

Davies will defend her Women’s Australian Open title next week at Commonwealth in Melbourne. She will be joined by Webb, Blumenherst and Hull in another combined Australian and Ladies European Tour event. http://www.golf-finder.net/images/fbfiles/images/22.jpg

Say this for John Daly: the man knows how to attract attention.

Daly and controversy are playing partners from way, way back, and his PGA Tour discipline file, released recently as part of a court action, details in 456 mind-numbing pages detailing exactly what the golfer/reality show star has done to himself, his fans, his sponsors and the game of golf over the last 20 years.Garry Smits of Jacksonville.com reviewed the file, and provides few of the choice bits:

Daly failed to "give best efforts" during Tour events at least 21 times.

Daly was disciplined for hitting a tee shot off the top of a beer can during a Pro-Am event. (You can see that shot right here.)

Daly allegedly nearly hit an Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agent at a security checkpoint at the 2005 U.S. Open.

Daly allegedly also smacked golf balls over the heads of spectators in bleachers at a 1993 golf clinic.

The PGA Tour ordered Daly to counseling and/or alcohol rehab seven times.

Daly's first violation came in April 1991 when he cursed out a playing partner; four months later, he would win the PGA Championship.

Daly was suspended from the Tour in 1994 after getting into a fight with a fellow player after the player accused Daly of hitting into his group during the World Series of Golf.

Daly was fined a total of nearly $100,000, suspended from the Tour five times, given probation six times, and cited for unprofessional conduct 11 times.

The PGA Tour has never released a player's discipline file to the public, but Daly's was released as part of a court case involving Daly and Morris

Publishing. Daly had filed suit against Morris in 2005, and after he lost the case, the file became public record. The file extends to Daly's suspension from golf in late 2008 after he was found passed out at a Hooters in Winston-Salem, N.C. The file also includes letters, both positive and negative, from golf fans.

The revelations come as Daly is working to get himself back into playing shape. He hasn't won a PGA event since 2004, but he did make the cut at last year's

British Open when Tiger Woods, among others, did not. He's also performed relatively well at some other events, but drama follows him like a shadow -- after a miserable round earlier this year at Torrey Pines, he proclaimed himself retired, then returned two weeks later at Pebble Beach. He's had lap-band surgery to drop more than 100 pounds (check the pictures), he's got the new reality show, and he's become -- of all things -- an underwear model.

Being reminded of his lengthy and colorful past can't be easy for Daly. But with any luck, it'll inspire him to make sure he doesn't add any more pages to the file. http://www.golf-finder.net/images/fbfiles/images/21.jpg

1. Ian Poulter : The Englishman has played in two tournaments on the PGA Tour this year, winning the bigger one (Accenture) and keeping himself afloat in the other (Waste Management) with a second round 63. He admitted to getting tired toward the end of last week, but with rest he will be a serious contender at Augusta, where he has finished in the top-25 the last three years.

2. Camilo Villegas : A missed putt from making the finals at Accenture, Villegas has finished in the top-10 in both starts this year. He was a contender at TPC Scottsdale until a third round 71, but still carded a tie for eighth thanks to an opening 62, tying the low score ever on Thursday at the Phoenix Open.

3. Hunter Mahan : Nothing coming into this week at the Waste Management suggested a win. Mahan was bounced in the first round of the Accenture, and hadn't finished in the top-27 all season, but a couple of 65s over the weekend without a bogey has Mahan with his second trophy of his career.

4. Steve Stricker : Atop the inaugural Power Rankings after his win at the Northern Trust, Stricker got bounced in the first round of the match play and didn't play at TPC Scottsdale. He still has three top-10s in four starts, but his play of late has dropped him a few spots.

5. Dustin Johnson : The big-hitting Johnson was third to Stricker at the Northern, and won at Pebble Beach, but also couldn't get out of the first round at the Accenture. No worries, he still leads the FedEx Cup point standings, but hasn't shown much the last couple of weeks.

6. Rickie Fowler : Two top-5s in his last four starts, Fowler's rookie season is off in Tiger-like fashion. At 21, Fowler is making waves, and if you combine his start this season with his three tournaments in '09 coupled with Q-School, he might be playing the most consistent golf (http://www.igolfyoo.com/goods-493-Ping+G15+Driver.do) over the last five months.

7. Robert Allenby : Another week, another top-10 for Allenby. He has played five events this year, finishing in the top-27 in all of them, including three top-10s and a second.

8. Paul Casey : Casey has played only two times on the PGA Tour this season, but was in the top-10 in both, including a runner-up finish to Poulter at Accenture.

9. Tim Clark : Talk about a quietly good start to his 2010. Clark has played five events, has been in the top-30 in all of them, including three top-10s. His second place finish at the Bob Hope was a month ago, but he faired well at the match play like he always does.

10. Alex Prugh : Two rookies in the top-10 = good for the PGA Tour. Prugh was second on this list last time, and only dropped spots because others have played so well. The rookie has three top-10s in five starts, has yet to miss a cut and is 23rd on the money list, very much in line to get a card for 2011. http://www.golf-finder.net/images/fbfiles/images/20.jpg

Sorry Anthony Kim, Ryo Ishikawa, Rory McIlroy, Charles Howell III, Casey Wittenberg and Chris Wood. Nice try Adam Scott, Michael Sim, Sergio Garcia and Justin Rose. You guys aren't going to be it. The title of "The next Tiger Woods" has been floating around ever since that blistering 2000 season, when Woods won three majors and showed everyone that he is, literally, the man. That was the year people started asking who would come next, if anybody.

It took 10 years to find him, but he's that fella there to the right. Yep, the one in the oversized hat and the orange slickers, just 21 fresh years of age and with a golf game good enough to be dominant. On Sunday at the Waste Management Open in Phoenix, Fowler came a shot short of making his second playoff on the PGA Tour in just nine starts. And he has now finished in the top-10 four times in nine tournaments.

Fowler needed just two tournaments to make his first PGA Tour playoff. Tiger needed five. While that might be the last of the points toward Fowler, it has been too long since we've seen a kid come out and dominate like this so early in his PGA Tour tenure.

OK, so rag on him if you want (which I did), and say Tiger would never pass up on an eagle there, but if Fowler believed his best chance of making birdie was with a wedge, you can't fault him for being consistent. Maybe in a different situation, he rips a 3-iron at the green and makes a three and wins by a shot, just like Tiger, but it is early in his PGA Tour career and he has yet another second place finish to his name.

If he continues to put himself in these situations, he will be a PGA Tour winner in 2010 and the hottest thing on tour since Woods brought red to Sunday. If there is a player out there with all the intangibles to win a lot so early in his career, it has to be Fowler.

His goal was to make the Ryder Cup this season. If he keeps this up, I don't see a way that doesn't happen. Would you pass up on a youngster with flair and showmanship and miles and miles of game to represent your country? I sure wouldn't.

Who would have thought that the next Tiger would be hiding under a hat big enough for Dana Stubblefield? http://www.golf-finder.net/images/fbfiles/images/10.jpg

The True Rules Of Golf - Part 1 of 4

The game of golf is 90% mental and 10% mental.
If you want to get better at golf, go back and take it up at a much earlier age.
Since bad shots come in groups of three, a fourth bad shot is actually the beginning of the next

group of three.
When you look up and cause an awful shot, you will always look down again at exactly the moment

when you ought to start watching the ball if you ever want to see it again.
Any change works for a maximum of three holes and a minimum of not at all.
No matter how bad you are playing, it is always possible to play worse
Never keep more than 300 separate thoughts in your mind during your swing.
When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either hit one
more club or two more balls.

Hi, my name is Keith Kanzel and I work for the National University Golf Academy based in Carlsbad, California. I'm really enjoying the Golf-Finder.net site as I'm learning my way around all the cool features the site has to offer. I'd like to share something with Golf-Finder.net members that we're doing at NUGA. While we all read, reply and post on tips to improve our game, I'm betting that I'm not the only one who wonders how my swing measures up against my fellow players. Here's a fun and helpful way to find out. We are holding a new Swing Challenge and would like to invite all forum members to participate in the this challenge. You'll be able to upload your swing and compete against others to win great prizes including a $1000 NUGA scholarship and personalized swing lab sessions. When you have a moment go to the NUGA Facebook page and check out the "Swing Challenge" tab for more information. www.facebook.com ugolfacademy

These are good days to be Michelle Wie. Coming off a season in which she finally began capitalizing on her immense promise, she's starting off the 2010 season with a triumphant tour through Asia. Next up: Singapore.

As Golfweek's Beth Ann Baldry notes, Wie is getting the pre-hydrant Tiger-style treatment: "Today’s paper features several features on Wie’s arrival, complete with a close-up picture of her pink boots and Louis Vuitton bag. There’s even a timeline of Monday’s activities. (At 4:30 p.m., she went to Chinatown to buy souvenirs.)"

And that's not the only Tiger comparison being made. At a press conference, an Asian journalist called her the "Tiger Woods of women's golf," which is not nearly the compliment it was three months ago. Asked about her thoughts on the Woods saga, Wie wisely replied, "No comment."

Something about Wie and all the acclaim she receives drives a certain segment of the golf -watching public -- or the golf-griping public -- insane. Maybe it's the fact that she was a millionaire before she could drive; maybe it's the fact that she squandered her talent early on and came off as a spoiled kid. But now, it's indisputable that she's got the skills and the presence to play at the LPGA's highest level. She's broken through with one win already, and it's likely that more are on the way. http://www.golf-finder.net/images/fbfiles/images/05.jpg

Subject: What is the Perfect Putting Speed - by: cherishyou

I'll say it one more time. When it comes to putting, speed is King. A putt hit at the perfect speed has the greatest chance of going in.
But what is the perfect speed? Should you hit it 12 inches past the hole? Six inches?
I remember reading Dave Pelzs' Putt Like The Pros. In that book he told how he had discovered the perfect putting speed. I believe it was 17" past the hole.
He said he had called a friend of his on tour and told him about it. The guy went out the next day and tried to hit the ball 17" past the hole every putt.
Needless to say, he had a miserable day.
Pelz has since corrected his error. It is far more correct to say there is no one distance you can hit the ball past the hole to maximize your chance of
making it.
The only thing for certain is that a putt that doesn't get to the hole will not go in. As for the how far past the hole to hit it debate, there are simply too many variables for the answer at my course to matter for you at yours.
It matters whether the greens are fast or slow. If the putt is uphill or downhill. Smooth or bumpy. How the holes are cut.
As you can see, trying to find the perfect, one size fits all distance is futile.
To me, the perfect speed is the one that reaches the hole and leaves a tap-in if it doesn't go in. Even from longer range, I would rather leave it a foot
short than four feet past the hole.
I always like to keep putting simple. While speed is definitely king, perfection is not attainable or necessary.
