What's in a shaft?

Hi there,

I'm curious to hear what shafts people are keen on at the moment.

About a year ago I picked up a Callaway X 460 Tour 8.5 driver with a factory Fujikura Tour Platform X-Stiff shaft. At the time I thought the shaft was the goods, but that was until I picked up a new 3 wood!

I managed to pick up the X Tour 15deg 3 wood with an 83 X flex Mitsubishi Diamana Blue shaft in it. Man this shaft is the BOMB! I used to hit my old 3 wood about 220m (240yards) if I absolutely crushed it, but with the Diamana shaft in my new 3 wood I'm getting it out to 250m (273yards).

The Diamana shaft has the most amazingly solid yet soft feel about it. After a good shot with my 3 wood I feel like I'm swinging a rock with the Fujikura. I'm wondering if anyone else has found the big difference here?

I have definitely decided that my next purchase will be an 8.5 Tour Ft-5 with the Mitsubishi Blue shaft! I can't wait to see how much longer my drive will be.

For my Ping Rapture driver, I'm happy to stay with the Aldila VS Proto shaft. It gives me good feedback as well as results.

In terms of Fujikura Tour Platform shaft, no matter 26.3 or 27.3, it requires tremendously high swing speeds to release the kick in the shaft. I'd say around 120 MPH for that X-stiff shaft. It has high kick point, and from my experience, its stiffness is compareatively higher than other shafts. (eg. I feel Aldila NV stiff = Fujikura Tour Platform 26.3 regular) The result is the feel of "hitting a rock like" harsh response if the swing speed is not up there.

Diamana Blue X83 has a mid/high kick point, which is easier to release compared to FTP 26.3/27.3. It's not surprising that you'll get a better feel hitting this shaft. If you get good results out of this shaft, then getting other woods in the same shaft is a good idea. Another suggestion: give stiff or even regular a try, because everyone's way of releasing his clubhead isn't exactly the same. Basically, the softer the shaft, the longer you'll hit - if distance is your thing.
