Came Down Golf Club is a Private Members Club, the course nestles in the Dorset countryside, between Dorchester and Weymouth. With splendid views of Hardy’s Wessex and Portland Harbour, site of the 2012 Olympic Sailing events.
Several holes have tumuli and a few feature grassed over bomb craters which makes the course particularly interesting and attractive. The 7th hole is rated by many as one of the most beautifully picturesque in the whole county. There are 5 Par 3s, of which two (6 and 12) offer special challenges.
This 18 Hole, Harry S Colt designed, 6255 yard (5720 meters SSS 70) the Downland Course is situated on chalk and benefits from excellent drainage. Visited by Samuel Ryder it is hailed as the Birthplace of the Ryder Cup.

Came Down is a very quaint little course perched on top of the Ridgeway between Weymouth and Dorchester. There are great views to be had down across Maiden Castle and the surrounding countryside from the first tee and clubhouse.
The course itself is challenging enough for all levels of golfer but there is invariably the added problem of the winds that are often blowing being so close to the coast. A couple of rather sedate opening holes down the hill the next few snake through, or skirt around, the trees and require accuracy off of the tee to leave a direct approach to the green.
The par 4 4th up through a small valley followed by the long par3 5th across the valley are quite unique little holes. The blind tee shot from the 7th is followed by an enjoyable approach across and down to the bunker protected green with the ball generally below your feet for the right handers.
The 8th from the elevated tee give the first view of one of the couple of craters that adorn this course. The ninth sees you heading straight back up the hill to the back nine which is much flatter by comparison.
The tree lined tenth is a tidy little par 3 hole with very little margin for error. The back nine is then a more barren landscape as you move away from the trees after the 11th and as mentioned, before has a much more even terrain, which comes as a welcome relief. The back to back par 5\'s, 13 and 14, can be very Jekyll and Hyde depending on the wind directions. The 16th green is a daunting prospect to fire into given the dry stone walls flanking 2 sides with the road running on the other side.
