The links of The European Club is one of the giants of modern course architecture as it has raced into the World's Top-100 Courses since opening for play in 1992 and it has been used as a training ground by many champions such as Tiger Woods, who holds the course record of 67, and Padraig Harrington.
The club hosted the Irish Professional Championship of 2007 specifically to help Irish hero Harrington prepare for the British open at Carnoustie the following week. It proved a perfect dress rehearsal as Harrington won the Irish title only in a playoff and had to beat Sergio Garcia in a playoff the following weekend to lift the British crown!
The links is big, modern big at 7,355 yards off the back tees, and spectacular as it tumbles through an amazing turbulent dunes system on the Irish Sea just 30-miles south of capital city Dublin. It is a popular international destination for the quality of the golf and the convenience of city life by day and night just 40-minutes away by motorway.
The links was designed, built and is owned by Pat Ruddy who is also an international golf-writer and whose 30-plus other course designs include renowned places like Druids Glen, Ballyliffin, Rosapenna, Portsalon, Donegal and Montreal Island. He unashamedly seeks to make this link the ultimate test of golf and an inspiring place to spend a day of one's life.
One of the big features of the links is the way in which the bunkers are lined with railway sleepers. This very traditional treatment makes the hazards starkly bautifully and also menacing!
Three holes have been voted amongst the World's 500 Best Golf Holes and the seventh is ranked as one of the World's 100-Best Golf Holes.
Consistently high rankings in all such exercises has made this a magnet for travelling golfers eager to say that they have played in all the places that are truly great golf and true to the spirit of the game.
This is essentially the spiritual home for man of golf Ruddy but he welcomes other golfers to visit and escape for awhile from the cares of the world
Guest fees in Summer 2008 were €180 but a second game could be enjoyed by the same person the same day or within 7-days excluding Saturday and Sunday mornings, for just an added €70 thus making it within the reach of all serious players.
